Map the Commercial Relationship

Write down each party: advisor, firm, product sponsor, custodian and introducer. Ask who pays whom and which costs you pay directly or indirectly. A relationship summary can help organize questions, but read the agreements and product disclosures too.

Ask About the Alternative

Request an explanation of reasonable alternatives and why they were not chosen. Ask whether compensation differs across those options. If the answer is a slogan rather than a comparison of costs, limitations and services, ask for a concrete example.

Separate a Conflict from a Conclusion

A disclosed conflict does not automatically make an arrangement wrong. The useful question is how it is addressed and what it means for your decision. Document the explanation, compare alternatives and take time before committing.
